Bathurst Regional Council has completed the upgrade of accessible parking spaces across town to improve safety and appropriate usage.
Accessible parking is identifiable by either a sign or a blue painted car space and is reserved for those with Mobility Parking Scheme (MPS) Permits.
Council has upgraded accessible parking spaces to include an additional designated entry/exit space, identified by thick yellow stripes adjacent to the parking space. This upgrade accounts for the room needed to maneuver in and out of a vehicle.
‘No Parking’ has been stenciled at the frontages of these spaces to help prevent able persons from parking in/or over these zones which creates problems for persons with a disability to appropriately park and alight from their vehicles.
Chairperson of the Bathurst Regional Access Committee (BRAC), Bob Triming, remarked that this upgrade to accessible parking spaces substantially enhances ease of use.
“This extension to accessible parking spaces might seem minor, however it means we can easily and safely get in and out of our vehicles without being constrained.
“However, misuse of accessible parking spaces is unfortunately rife in Bathurst. Inappropriate usage of these spaces has a direct impact on a person with a disability. Accessible spaces may not always be marked with ‘No Parking,’ yet they will always have Disability Parking signage. I implore drivers across Bathurst to respect this signage and park in the plethora of other available car parks that are not reserved for disability access,” Mr Triming said.
Bathurst Mayor, Cr Robert Taylor, commented on the benefit of working with BRAC to ensure Bathurst remains an accessible, inclusive city.
“It is great to be able to work with the Bathurst Regional Access Committee on a range of issues that improve access for all our residents," Mayor Taylor said.
Those found parking in accessible parking spaces without a permit will be faced with a $682 parking infringement.
