Council’s new Animal Rehoming Centre, BARC, won the Australian Institute of Architect’s award for Public Architecture at the 2025 NSW Regional Architecture Awards.

This awards program recognises Regional NSW’s best new residential, commercial and public buildings, with BARC’s win a testament to Council’s appointed Architecture firm, Welsh + Major’s, design intent for the project.

Director of Welsh + Major, David Welsh, thanked Bathurst Regional Council for the faith that was placed in their creative vision and remarked on the rewarding nature of this project.

“We are immensely proud to have won this accolade alongside the team at Bathurst Regional Council. When drafting our concept, great care was taken to ensure that the handling of animals can be done in a manner that is secure for both the staff and animals, all within a calming setting. Our team knew we’d put forth a great design and it is always uplifting to have that recognised by the wider industry” he said.

BARC’s new facility was opened in June 2024 and provides a modern, large-capacity animal premises with an expanse of space for visitor interaction.

The site features an adoption pavilion, and a first-in-regional-NSW, purpose-built companion animal education space aimed at maximising opportunities for animals to find their forever home.

Bathurst Mayor, Cr Robert Taylor, reflected on the fantastic impact of BARC’s redevelopment and the wonderful recognition this award brings to Bathurst.

“The upgraded Bathurst Animal Rehoming Centre marked the start of a new era for the management of small animals in our city. If you’re considering adding a pet to your family, please do head on over and meet the playful animals they have as they’re all in need of caring new homes.

“It certainly is terrific to have the team’s dedication recognised at such a high level. Well done to everyone at BARC for putting in great work every day and thank you to Welsh and Major for responding so excellently to our brief, I’d certainly say it was worth it!” he said.
