The community can now plan a picnic and a play date with the opening of Stage 2 of the Centennial Park upgrade.

Mayor Cr Jess Jennings officially opened the park with Stephen Lawrence MLC and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole. They were joined by members of the Friends of Centennial Park.

“Centennial Park is a key greenspace in the centre of our city and the latest stage of works continue the transformation of this much-loved precinct, which started with Council's investment in the Stage 1 works in 2022.

“So many people have fond memories of Centennial Park, from the years when it was home to visiting circuses, and a place to hold community picnics and family gatherings.  That was the message we got from residents in developing the Centennial Park masterplan, and the investment in upgrading infrastructure and facilities at the park will ensure it remains a focal point for the community for decades to come.”

“This latest investment to create a new playground and passive recreation elements in line with Every One Can Play design principals, provides essential recreation facilities to enhance Centennial Park’s use and enjoyment by everyone, regardless of age or ability.” Cr Jennings said.

“These works complement the work undertaken in Stage 1 which was finished in 2023. This included the the formalisation of the main cross paths from an old gravel surface to a stamped concrete path network, the planting of a formal avenue trees along the path network, installation of irrigation for the avenue of trees, installation of new internal park lighting and the installation of seating within the central axis of the cross paths,” Cr Jennings said.

The Honourable Stephen Lawrence MLC said the Centennial Park upgrade project has ensured the green space stays central to the Bathurst community.

“This is a wonderful open space and it’s been a long-standing part of the Bathurst community, now locals will get even more use out of the area as they come together to create memories at family and community events,” Mr Lawrence said.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said This is a fantastic addition to the Bathurst community with many families and kids already testing out the new playground, swing set, climbing web and picnic facilities.

The project includes new children’s play equipment as well as picnic shelters, seating, path connections, tree planting, lighting and irrigated lawn and garden bed areas.

The Stage 2 upgrade has been funded through a $887,580 NSW Government Grant and a $300,000 investment from Council.

The project has been completed by local business Speeds Landscaping.
