Windradyne interpretative signage

Council has installed interpretative signage at the main entry points to Windradyne, near the intersection of Suttor and Bradwadine Streets and Evernden and Bradwardine Streets.

The suburb is named after Windradyne, the Head Warrior and Wiradyuri resistance fighter.

After several of Windradyne’s family members were massacred in what would become known as the potato field incident, Windradyne conducted giban (payback lore) against the offending British colonisers and led Wiradyuri Warriors in a fierce and highly effective guerilla war against the fledging colonial settlement of Bathurst.

On August 14, 1824 Governor Brisbane issued a proclamation of martial law and dispatched soldiers with others to keep the Wiradyuri ‘in a constant state of alarm’.

Windradyne’s leadership and example as a Head Warrior who stood up for his people and fought to save his country remains a source of inspiration and pride to the Wiradyuri people.

The signage has been installed as part of the 200th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in Bathurst by Governor Brisbane, which has been marked with a series of events, known as the Dhuluny project.

Pathway to Sustainability

Council considered its fifth Pathway to Sustainability report at the Council meeting this week.

The report outlines the actions taken to date by Council in implementing the Morrison Low initiatives identified as part of finding savings and efficiencies within Council’s operations and outlining the path moving forward including the need for a well-developed Financial Sustainability Strategy. The strategy includes a number of key pieces of work that Council now needs to focus on as the pillars of the next phase of the Pathway to Sustainability.

These include a revision of Council’s Asset Management Plans; undertake service level reviews; continue to focus on and optimise Counci’s return on its land portfolio; undertake a review of developer contributions and the adoption of the new Community Strategic Plan.

In the lead up to the Local Government Election on 14 September Council will produce a weekly Council Column in lieu of the regular Mayoral Column
