Overnight Pens Closed at BARC

The overnight pens have been closed at BARC until further notice.

Over the weekend, 12 adult dogs and 11 puppies were left in the overnight enclosure, with a pregnant female giving birth to 5 more pups soon after.

2 of these dogs have been successfully returned to their owners, with thanks to their microchip, and 1 dog was handed in with a note to assist staff in finding its home.

This influx of close to 30 new animals only increases the facility’s overcrowded status.

BARC is now running at around 80 dogs, several of which are aggressive and require training and support to become available for rehoming; and more than 50 cats, many of them juvenile and requiring intense care. This number of abandoned animals leaves the centre at more than double its intended capacity.

The decision to temporarily cease the operation of the overnight pen is regretted but brought about by the extent of irresponsible pet ownership in the community.

Council needs to protect the welfare of our staff, and the animals that are already in care.
