Fifty museum objects and artwork from the Bathurst region are now featured on the Museums and Galleries NSW (M&G NSW) Storyplace website.

Council secured $45,661 from the Creative Capital Grant Funding Program for the project which providing funding for equipment purchase, training, story development and website hosting.

General Manager David Sherley said the Storyplace website highlights objects and artworks from museum, gallery and cultural collections across NSW.

“The website gives regional institutions a platform to promote their collections while providing online access.  Images of the featured objects are accompanied by stories highlighting the culture and history of local communities.

“Included in the local objects highlighted on the website are the jawbone of a thylacine, a teacup designed for moustaches, the ball once used by a pioneer of women’s cricket and Brett Whiteley’s felt hat.

“The project drew together participants from Council’s cultural facilities as well as members of the Bathurst District Historical Society, Rockley Mill and Stables Museum and the Bathurst Agricultural Research Station.

“Not only does the project provide an insight into the valuable collections held by this community that can now be accessed by a broad audience via the website, it also provided volunteers and staff with skills in digitisation and object photography.  The various groups also had the opportunity to work together in their pursuit of caring for the region’s heritage collections,” Mr Sherley said.

All the digitised objects and their stories can be found at storyplace.org.au
