Cycleways & Footpaths

Cycleways and Footpaths

Council is responsible for the maintenance of more than 100 kilometres of paved concrete footpaths and approximately 24 kilometres of off-road cycleways.

Council provides a formed footpath and cycleway network to enable pedestrian and cyclist access to strategic points around Bathurst city area and within some villages. This includes links between the city area and outer suburban areas (Kelso, Eglinton, South Bathurst, Llanarth, Windradyne).

A map of cycling routes in the Bathurst region can be accessed in Walking and Cycling(PDF, 5MB) .

There is $100,000 included in the Capital Renewal budget for formed footpath and cycleways, $150,000 for construction of new footpaths plus any grant funding that may become available throughout the year. This amount has been programmed in the current 4 year plan.

The total maintenance expenditure budgeted to provide the formed footpath and cycleway network in the next 10 years is estimated at $3.902 million.

Council has adopted a Community Access and Cycling Plan that will link various facilities throughout Bathurst with a paved footpath. The plan was adopted in 2011 and commenced in the 2011/2012 construction program.

The first priority is to connect medical facilities, such as hospitals and aged care facilities, followed by educational facilities and shopping areas.

At the time, the works identified in the Plan were estimated to cost in the order of $10 million to complete. The impact of this on Council's resources led to the ranking of the identified works on the basis of priorities and this is the program that has been followed since adoption.
