An exciting new local component has been added to the Bathurst Macquarie Heritage Medal in 2017.

Mayor of Bathurst Cr Graeme Hanger OAM said Council, in conjunction with the Bathurst & District Branch of the National Trust, has included the Bathurst Region Heritage Awards as part of the Bathurst Macquarie Heritage Medal program to recognise local projects which demonstrate an outstanding contribution to protecting, enhancing and promoting the unique heritage of the Bathurst region.

“This is a natural extension of the Bathurst Macquarie Heritage Medal which recognises excellence in heritage in its many forms at a national level and its role in shaping our cultural identity.

“It is recognising the role played at a local level by the many dedicated and passionate organisations and individuals who are committed to preserving and interpreting the unique heritage of the Bathurst region.

“A special award, to be known as The Chifley Award, will be awarded to the project that demonstrates the most outstanding contribution to the built, natural or cultural heritage of the Bathurst region,” Cr Hanger said.

Bathurst and District Branch, National Trust chairperson Iain McPherson said the introduction of a local heritage awards program in conjunction with the Bathurst Macquarie Heritage Medal was an exciting initiative and one that was sure to create plenty of interest locally.

Nominations are being received for projects for all aspects of heritage - buildings and places, the natural environment, people and objects and their stories.

“The National Trust is pleased to be partnering with Bathurst Regional Council to introduce this award to recognise local achievements in heritage,” said Iain McPherson.

“Bathurst has an active interest in its history and heritage as a key lifestyle and economic asset and the Bathurst Regional Heritage Awards and The Chifley Award will recognise the contributions being made within the local community,” Mr McPherson said.
