As of 18 January, appointments at BARC have been put on hold due to a confirmed case of Parvo Virus within the facility.
BARC is currently under quarantine and a thorough deep clean has been undertaken.
The case has been traced back to an unvaccinated stray dog, which had been impounded at BARC for a period of one week, who became unwell and subsequently tested positive for Parvo Virus.
A litter of eight puppies has since tested positive to the virus. They were placed in quarantine on arrival, as per Council’s usual protocols for infant animals, and thus have not had any contact with other animals in the facility.
The BARC team is taking all possible measures to manage any risk of transmission.
Mayor Cr Robert Taylor is urging the community to ensure that proper vaccination and registration measures are followed for pets across the Bathurst Region.
“It is imperative to keep our pets’ vaccinations up to date. We want to avoid viruses being contracted among our animals as much as possible, not only for their wellbeing and for ours as owners, but to prevent local outbreaks as we are seeing here.
“I also want to remind the community of the importance of microchipping and registering your pets; this ensures they can be promptly returned to you if they ever become lost. The team at BARC works exceptionally hard, but it makes things difficult for staff and the animals if the rightful owners cannot be located” he said.
Updates will be provided in due course.
